United Bank Helps Reader To Reader Bring the World of Finance To Kids

Amherst, MA – May 23, 2005 – Amherst-based literacy organization Reader To Reader, Inc. is bringing the world of money and finance education to kids in Springfield and Holyoke thanks to a grant from Holyoke’s United Bank.

The United Bank grant enabled Reader To Reader to purchase special book collections for 20 school libraries in the Pioneer Valley that give kids grades K -12 the history of money and lessons on investing. The grade school book sets include titles such as Follow the Money, in which newly minted quarter narrates the story of currency, and If You Made a Million, which explores earning, spending, saving and borrowing money.  The high school book sets explore the concepts of saving and investing with titles such as The Young Investor: Projects and Activities for Making Your Money Grow, and Growing Money: A Complete Investing Guide for Kids.

Response from area school librarians has been enthusiastic. “Last week I had a teacher request books on budgeting, investing and money,” notes Putnam Vocational Technical High School librarian, Susan Kashmanian-Smith.  “She had no ideas for titles, authors or ISBNs, nothing for me to reference.  After searching several library vendors using various keywords I gave up in frustration and so did she.  Imagine my surprise when we received the delivery from Reader To Reader and United Bank.  Now not only do we have resources for the teacher and students but also a reference for me to order from.  Once again Reader To Reader came through.”

“United Bank really helped us fill an area of tremendous need,” says Reader To Reader’s executive director David Mazor.  “Most of the schools had few books for kids on financial literacy and certainly nothing current.  Thanks to United Bank these students will be much more knowledgeable about the world of money and hopefully that knowledge will help them save and invest wisely.”

Reader To Reader, Inc. is a public charity that brings books free of charge to under-resourced school libraries across the United States.   The award-winning organization serves over 160 schools in 27 states by recycling used books that are in top condition so that they can find new homes in school libraries.  They also supply new books to schools purchased with funds from private donations and grants.
