Paul Newman Supports Reader To Reader Program

Amherst, MA – April 20, 2005 – Legendary actor and philanthropist Paul Newman has donated $5,000 to Amherst-based literacy organization Reader To Reader, Inc. in support of their work in poor rural schools in Mississippi. Paul Newman has a long history of philanthropy and has donated over $150 million dollars to charity through his Newman’s Own Foundation.

“This donation is the first we have ever received that specifically funds our work in Mississippi” says Reader To Reader’s executive director David Mazor.  “These schools are some of our nation’s poorest and Mr. Newman’s donation will allow us to ship thousands more books to revitalize their school libraries.”

Reader To Reader, Inc. aids 21 of the poorest public schools in Mississippi, and currently reaches over 160 schools in 26 states, with new schools added on almost a weekly basis.  The organization provides a free resource lifeline that makes a long-term commitment to replenishing school libraries.

Resources come from a variety of sources, including recycling gently used books that are in top condition and special new book purchases from funds provided by donors.
