Dear Friend of Reader To Reader, I hope you enjoy this newsletter about the Reader To Reader Book Project. Our success is very much due to your donations of books, postage money, and most of all your generous spirit. Please forward this newsletter and help us spread the word. Just this week our heavily laden delivery van made another stop at the Holyoke Alternative program in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Last year we built a library from the ground up for the grades k-8 program and this year I am pleased to report that their new library is being moved to a larger room to accommodate even more books as the school adds grade 9-12 to their program. We dropped off 700 books covering all grade levels and including a Compton’s Encyclopedia and the American Medical Association Home Health Library, so they are going to need the extra room. With the fall in full swing we have been expanding our outreach like crazy. We just added our first school in Portland, Oregon, bringing our book program into its 20th state. We also have added two new schools in Washington, DC, a school in Oakland, California, and five more schools in the inner-city slums of Compton, California. These are in addition to the four Compton schools we were already serving. Here is a recent note from one of those schools.
Speaking of our inner-city work, this fall we also added M.S. 324 in New York City. Here is a note from their literacy teacher.
In addition to all the grade preK to 12 work we do we also serve a growing list of colleges. This past spring we began working with the United Negro College Fund on identifying historically African-American colleges that are especially in need of college level books for their libraries. This brought the addition of Barber-Scotia College, Bethune-Cookman College, Huston-Tillotson College, and Tougaloo College to the colleges we serve. Our college work includes checking each book we send them against their online catalogues to ensure that the books are not already on their shelves. This is a time consuming process, but it is part of what has made our college work such a success. Here is some recent feedback from Bethune-Cookman College.
We are constantly striving to make sure that every book that we send, no matter the grade level, is the ideal book for that school. It means a sorting, selection, and shipping process that is both meticulous, and involves an interactive process with each school. Thank your for your support. Until next month,
Sincerely, Please help us with a tax-deductible donation. Here are just a few of our recent book shipments: Holyoke Alternative Program, Holyoke, MA
