Summer Reading Camps
In the summer of 2010, Caitlin worked in Santa Cruz alongside community leader Victor Gamboa to develop and lead Beyond el Campo's first summer literacy camp, which included over 50 students and 5 counselors. There were two camps over a two-week period and the students participated in various activities. They went on a field trip to the capital, spent the day at the Universidad de Costa Rica, Costa Rica's top public university. Students were between the ages of 11-15, and for each of them, it was their first time ever stepping foot in a library.
We also have plans in the works to begin a women's book club and a children's after school program.
Beyond el Campo also has an after school/summer English instruction program for children. Right now these lessons are given at the children's nutritional center in town, due to lack of space in the library. In collaboration with other volunteer groups, including International Student Volunteers, over 60 children from Santa Cruz have received English lessons through this program.
